rentzsch.tumblr.com: Using M4 to Compose Your... →

Chris Wanstrath has a cool project to collect folks’ .gitignore files. Chris breaks these down by platform and language/environment, which is great. What’s less great is you can’t pass multiple files to core.excludesfile, so you can’t easily compose them. The ideal situation would to extend…

A minimal project template for Xcode 4 →
Many people have their own project- and/or file-templates for practical or aesthetic reasons. For example I don’t like the naming convention provided by Apple such as XXXX-Info.plist, XXXX-Prefix.pch, and XXXXAppDelegate for the project XXXX. On Xcode 3.x. it was relatively easy to modify them. Since Xcode 4, however, Apple introduced a new template format that is no longer compatible with those...
'The Economist' To Halt Production For Month To... →

LONDON—World-renowned news and opinion magazine The Economist announced plans to suspend any new online and print content for the next month in an effort to finally allow subscribers a chance to catch up. “It’s only fair to our readers,” said Economist editor Winthrop Parker, adding that there was no reason for subscribers to feel ashamed for not necessarily knowing every last detail...
A Bad Good Idea

I had a vision of embedding C++ in a funny kind of comment in (Obj-)C(++) that clang would recognize, dynamically compile and then execute its transformations against the containing code’s Abstract Syntax Tree.
I hope to emerge from my LLVM fever swamp any day now.
Tough enough to explain my love of llvm to other dev’s (despite never having time to dig deep into it.), let...

I think it would be cool if this term were to ever catch on, and as such I’m throwing it out there for you to use if you’d like.
This has my vote.

update
Hi,
I’m been kind of quiet on here for a while. Sorry about that. The last year+ went by like a blur and I now feel like I’m back to “normal”, whatever that means these days.
In short, I burnt out a bit during the past year working on an area I cared deeply about (UI), then received an offer to work with some amazing people doing something an area I had previously...

Weeding out entrants has a noble intent to help students discover that computer science isn’t for them at an early stage, however it is insular and conceited.
Many — perhaps most — entrants will do well to jump directly into the deep end of the computer science pool. However room should be allowed for those who want to splash around in the shallow end first.
This sort of...

– Tom Ford (from this interview)
[Yeah. The double standard is ridiculous and getting worse. Lately, even men’s knees are becoming a taboo zone: I went shopping for shorts last summer, and it was nearly impossible to find any that weren’t both below the knees and shapelessly baggy. WTF? —Mr. Eyepool...

NY Times: We Have Met the Enemy and He Is PowerPoint
“PowerPoint makes us stupid,” Gen. James N. Mattis of the Marine Corps, the Joint Forces commander, said this month at a military conference in North Carolina. (He spoke without PowerPoint.) Brig. Gen. H. R. McMaster, who banned PowerPoint presentations when he led the successful effort to secure the...

Nazi Soap is Bad Luck for Everybody. →
Using fat rendered from cows (tallow) or pigs (lard) for soap making is an ancient technique. As far back as the second century, Romans were making soap from goat tallow. It works pretty well, though you can replace it with vegetable fats, as Dr. Bronner’s does with olive oil. You’ll notice, however, tallow and lard are derived from animals. This is not necessarily the case with Nazi soap.
